Shillong: Meghalaya officials are putting the pressure on the Central Bureau of Investigation. They want an explanation regarding a new temple rising inside the CBI campus in Mawdiangdiang. The site sits on government land. Nobody gave the builders permission.

The New Shillong Township Development Agency fired off a letter to the Deputy Inspector General of the CBI Anti-Corruption Branch in Shillong. Records show the state leased this land to the federal agency on November 14, 2018. The deal had one goal: an office and residential complex.

P K Boro, the Member Secretary and Director of Urban Affairs, signed the notice. He pointed to Clause 10 of the original lease. It forbids any construction or site changes without written consent from the agency. Boro wrote, "The lease agreement as laid down may perhaps invariably be complied with," while pushing the CBI to address the issue immediately.

The project sparked a local political firestorm. The opposition Voice of the People Party is now crying foul. They question the legal standing of the structure. They want the state to enforce the lease terms if violations occurred.
