Shillong: The Election Commission of India has stayed quiet on the by-election for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat. The seat has sat empty for nearly six months. Ricky A.J. Syngkon died on February 19 at age 54. He suffered a cardiac arrest during a futsal match in Mawiong. Locals are talking. Many suspect the delay serves to kill the sympathy factor for the Voice of the People Party.
Government officials dismissed these claims. They point to Section 151(b) of the Representation of the People Act. This rule mandates a six-month window for elections. However, the law allows for exceptions if the Commission and the Central government certify that holding the vote is difficult. Officials claim current delays result from the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. They expect a November vote after the final rolls drop on October 7.
The government insists no political agenda exists. One official stated, "The Election Commission follows certain procedures to conduct elections." Critics suggested the ruling coalition wants to weaken the VPP. Officials pushed back, noting that delays occur elsewhere. They cited a constituency in West Bengal that has remained vacant for 18 months.
