Shillong: Two North Eastern Hill University professors are battling for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat. The university cleared both men to run. The 88th emergent meeting of the NEHU Executive Council approved the No Objection Certificates on July 30. Joint Registrar documentation confirmed the move after Prof Batskhem Myrboh fought an alleged delay in court.
Dr D.R.L. Nonglait represents the ruling National People’s Party. He teaches in the Department of Khasi. Prof Batskhem Myrboh runs for the opposition Voice of the People’s Party from the Department of Political Science. A senior official noted the university's role in the process. The race follows the February 19 death of Dr Ricky A.J. Syngkon. He held the seat while serving as a professor at the same institution.
The constituency covers 36 Assembly segments across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. It remains a key political stronghold in Meghalaya. The Election Commission of India has not picked a date for the vote yet. Both candidates are now hitting the campaign trail hard. The rare contest highlights the academic ties to the late MP, as a university official stated, "the outgoing parliamentarian and both principal contestants share academic ties with the state’s premier central university."
