Shillong: Shillong is set to host the 5th KIO North East Zone Karate Championship from October 22 to 24. The event expects 899 athletes, coaches, referees, and team officials to converge on the city. The three-day competition will unfold at the North-Eastern Hill University Convocation Hall.
The Karate India Organisation is running the event. The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association serves as the host with backing from the Meghalaya Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs. Organizers hope the tournament strengthens the sport across the region. Young competitors will use this stage to showcase their skills.
Athletes want to gain experience before the 39th National Games, which Meghalaya will host next year. Local karatekas see a clear goal. "Competing on home ground will give local athletes an opportunity to test themselves against their regional counterparts with support from friends, families and local sports enthusiasts." This home-field advantage aims to bolster the state's standing in future national and international tournaments.
