Shillong: A fire ripped through the Mithaas sweets shop at the North-Eastern Hill University campus in Shillong on October 20. The blaze erupted during morning business hours. Flames gutted the outlet and scorched the roof of the commercial complex. Firefighters rushed to the scene to stop the spread.

Employees were getting the shop ready for sales when they spotted the fire. They tried to kill the flames with fire extinguishers but failed. Nearby workers reported hearing loud noises just before the fire started. The shop owner suspects a gas issue. "The shop owner suspected a possible LPG-related incident," though officials have not confirmed a cylinder explosion.

No injuries occurred during the blaze. The fire spread to parts of the building that house a barber shop and a stationery store. Mithaas faces a provisional loss of 20 lakh rupees. Investigators have yet to determine the total cost of the damage or the specific cause of the fire.
