Shillong: The North-Eastern Hill University Executive Council cleared two faculty members to run in the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election. Officials handed out No Objection Certificates during their 88th emergent meeting. Candidates include Dr. D.R.L. Nonglait of the Department of Khasi for the National People’s Party and Prof. Batskhem Myrboh from the Department of Political Science for the Voice of the People Party.
The move comes after Prof. Myrboh dragged the school to the Meghalaya High Court, claiming administrators stalled his paperwork. This contest follows the death of sitting MP Ricky A.J. Syngkon on February 19. Syngkon was a VPP member and a former NEHU professor himself.
The Council also ratified new administrative roles. Prof. Lakhon Kma is the new Registrar (In-charge) while Prof. Ambika Prasad Pati takes over as Finance Officer (In-charge). Kma must now step aside from his leadership post at the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association. Kma stated, “I cannot discharge my duties as President of NEHUTA while serving as Registrar.”
The NEHUTA Executive Committee met Tuesday and settled the leadership shuffle. Vice-President Prof. Utpal Kumar De will cover presidential duties for the teachers’ group during Kma’s tenure.
