Guwahati: Krishna, a longtime departmental elephant at Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, is dead. The animal passed away on the evening of November 5 in the park's Western Range at Bagori. She suffered from visual impairment and other ailments for a significant period.

Assam Forest Minister Jayant Mallabaruah shared the news on social media. He honored her decades of service protecting the wilderness. "Some departures leave a silence that words cannot quite fill. Deeply saddened by the passing of Krishna, one of our beloved departmental elephants at Kaziranga National Park, on the evening of 5 November 2026. For our forest personnel, departmental elephants are far more than animals under their care. They are companions who share their everyday lives, their journeys through the forests and the challenges of protecting our wildlife," Mallabaruah stated.

Veterinarians from both the national park and the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation performed a post-mortem on November 6. They identified hepato-renal failure linked to old age as the preliminary cause of death. Dedicated mahouts and forest staff rely on these elephants to patrol the park. These animals remain essential to management operations.
