Guwahati: Police arrested seven people in Tinsukia, Assam, for running a cash-for-cheating scheme during National Institute of Open Schooling exams. The crackdown started on Thursday after a surprise raid at Bhawati Bhagwan DV Shiksha Niketan.
Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Purunjay Bora led the raid. The crew took bribes ranging from 15,000 to 25,000 rupees per student. They promised passing grades in exchange for the cash, according to police reports on November 6.
Authorities identified the school principal, Raghav Prasad Rai, as one of the detainees. The other suspects include Sunil Kumar Verma, Ajit Jain, Biki Prasad, Dipu Barman, Suresh Giri, and Shubhnath Bhagat.
Police filed an FIR immediately following the operation. The group appeared in court on Friday. Officials confirmed they are now in custody for further questioning. Investigators are still looking for more suspects. They want to know if the scheme spread to other schools in the district. Police stated: "Police are probing the extent of the alleged collection of money, the possible involvement of other people and whether the malpractice was limited to the examination centre or extended to other centres in the district."
