Guwahati: Angry residents swarmed the Barekuri Gaon Panchayat office in Assam's Tinsukia district to protest the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana selection process. The demonstration fell within the Makum Assembly constituency. Protesters demanded answers. Local women led the charge, claiming authorities intentionally snubbed eligible, impoverished families in Ward No. 5.

Protesters alleged that the current list favors those who already own permanent homes and vehicles. Meanwhile, families living in shacks remain ignored. The participants questioned how the panchayat verified the beneficiaries, arguing the process failed to identify households in actual need of state assistance. They want a high-level inquiry now. "The process had failed to adequately identify families genuinely in need of housing assistance," the protesters claimed during the demonstration.

The group urged the Assam government and local departments to audit the list immediately. They want officials to remove ineligible names and clear the way for those who qualify under the scheme. Transparency remains their primary demand, as they push for corrective measures to prevent future exclusion of the needy.
