Shillong: The central government greenlit a Rs 5,000 crore housing package for Assam. This PMAY-G initiative targets families gutted by recent floods. Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan met Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi on Tuesday to finalize the deal. Chouhan confirmed 3.8 lakh new houses will be built.
The government extended the PMAY-G survey window by 15 days. They want to ensure no victim misses out. Officials will use a digital survey to grant housing access to tea garden workers once they hold land pattas. Chouhan promised further housing sanctions to speed up local rehabilitation.
Farmers get a separate lifeline. The Centre approved Rs 832.70 crore for agriculture and rural development projects. This covers the Agriculture Unnati Yojana and the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana. Officials also cleared Rs 33.36 crore for mechanization and Rs 96.87 crore for horticulture. A sanction letter for Rs 139 crore was handed over to boost state farming investments.
Chouhan took to social media after the summit. He wrote, "The central government stood with the people of Assam with complete sensitivity during the current crisis." Sarma praised the swift turnaround. He expects the massive housing injection to stabilize thousands of displaced households.
