Guwahati: Cops in Assam's Cachar district hauled 21-year-old Anupam Das into custody Monday. He tried to snatch a minor girl from her home in Telitikor Part I. The brazen attempt occurred at 9 am. It was broad daylight.

Das, a local resident, walked into the house and grabbed the child. The girl's mother jumped in to save her daughter. Das pulled a machete. He threatened to kill the mother for interfering.

The mother escaped and sprinted to the Katigorah police station. She filed a formal written complaint against the man. Officers tracked him down immediately. He sits in a jail cell now.

The community is rattled. Residents want the book thrown at him. Local police confirm the investigation is active but keep details quiet for now. One local stated, "The alleged attempt to abduct the minor and the threat against her mother have triggered concern among residents of the area, who have demanded strict legal action against the accused."
