Guwahati: Residents of Barekuri in Assam’s Tinsukia district are drawing a line in the sand. They claim Oil India Limited is flying drones over their homes to capture footage of women in private spaces. The company says the drones inspect pipelines. The locals aren’t buying it.
A public meeting held at the Barekuri QPS site saw residents voice long-simmering anger. They accuse the state-owned oil giant of persistent neglect since extraction work began back in 2001-02. The community claims the company misidentified resources as North Chandmari for years before finally changing the name to Barekuri QPS following heavy pressure from local protests.
The grievances extend beyond privacy. Residents argue the company failed to improve the region despite its status as an Oil India-affected area. They also slammed the firm for ignoring the local potential for tourism. "If the company fails to engage with them by the deadline, they will launch an intensified protest against Oil India," a statement from the meeting organizers read.
The clock is ticking. Locals demand a formal sit-down with company officials by September 16 to address these unresolved issues. Should Oil India ignore this call, the community plans to escalate their response with organized protests.
