Shillong: Two masked suspects on scooters attacked the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board office in Shillong on Monday afternoon. The pair entered the premises between 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm and tossed two petrol bombs before fleeing. No injuries occurred, and property damage was avoided. One device landed near the chamber of the Senior Scientific Assistant, who escaped unharmed.
Shillong City Superintendent of Police Dangsan Khyriem confirmed the incident. "There were two petrol bombs hurled. The Board will file an FIR, and once that is done, we will register the case. Investigation to nab the culprits has already begun," he said. Police have officially registered a case at the Laitumkhrah Police Station.
Forensic teams combed the site for evidence. Investigators are currently analyzing CCTV footage to identify the suspects. While the attack follows a contentious public hearing regarding a Shree Cement limestone mining project at Lum Syrman in East Jaintia Hills, officials remain cautious. Local residents and farmers have opposed the project, citing fears of environmental damage. Member Secretary GH Chyrmang stated the board has no known enemies. He added, "Why target our office? We are just employees doing our work quietly. We have done nothing."
