Agartala: Tripura police arrested two suspected arms smugglers on Wednesday, November 4, seizing a cache of foreign weapons. The bust occurred near Battala Market in Agartala. Officers recovered three Italian-made pistols, six magazines, and 50 rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition. The state prepares for Urban Local Bodies elections on November 27. Security remains high.
Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Panna Lal Sengupta led the operation. Police acted on intelligence about smugglers arriving by train. Plainclothes officers tracked the targets to the Battala area. The suspects tried to bolt when police closed in. Officers caught them before they could escape. An Executive Magistrate oversaw the search with two independent witnesses present.
Sengupta confirmed the suspects hail from outside Tripura. He declined to name them due to the active investigation. Investigators now track the supply chain to find the source of the weapons and their intended buyers. Preliminary findings suggest these men were suppliers. Regarding the scope of the case, Sengupta said, "all possible connections were being investigated." Police continue to map the network as the November election date approaches.
