Agartala: Tripura Police are flooding the streets with more than 10,000 officers and Tripura State Rifles to secure this year's Durga Puja. Director General of Police G S Rao confirmed the buildup during an October 8 press conference with district superintendents. "Last year, around 10,000 personnel of the Tripura State Rifles and Police were deployed for Puja security. The force deployment is expected to be increased this year in view of the requirements," Rao said.
Officials have already logged 2,905 celebrations. That number will likely climb. Police are mounting 180 CCTV cameras and 169 watchtowers at key spots. They are also hiring extra vehicles to bolster mobile patrols and surveillance. Agartala remains the top priority. Twenty-nine new bike teams are scouring high-traffic zones while plainclothes units track suspicious actors. More female officers are hitting the beat this year too.
Traffic management is critical. Police are enforcing no-entry zones from 5 pm to 1 am throughout the festival. They are also setting up a green corridor for ambulances and fire trucks to bypass bottlenecks. A 24-hour control room will track movement. Security is also tightening at railway stations via the Government Railway Police.
Crime suppression remains a focus. Officers have registered five extortion cases tied to the festivities, up from two last year. Rao promised heavy legal fallout for anyone caught shaking down committees. Meanwhile, a fresh anti-drug drive is sweeping the state to keep the celebrations orderly. Police are coordinating closely with local Puja committees to keep the peace.
