Agartala: Tripura just took delivery of 440 metric tonnes of onions via the first Kanda Express rail shipment. The train arrived on October 22. This move aims to keep prices steady for local shoppers.
Robert H Touthang, Regional Manager for the National Cooperative Consumers Federation in Guwahati, confirmed the arrival. The government is selling this buffer stock at a subsidized price of 35 rupees per kilogram. Road shipments previously brought in 35 metric tonnes, pushing the total supply to 475 metric tonnes.
Barama Traders LLP handles the distribution. Touthang said, "Tripura had established a distribution network capable of reaching almost the entire state, unlike several other northeastern states where supplies are largely concentrated in major urban centres."
Federal data shows the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has moved over 2,800 metric tonnes of buffer onions into the Northeast this year. Officials used two Kanda Express trains totaling 1,292 metric tonnes, alongside 44 truck shipments carrying more than 1,500 metric tonnes. This latest delivery to Agartala marks a push to fix the local supply chain.
