Agartala: Tripura is moving to fix a massive milk shortage. Local production currently fails to meet consumer demand. Animal Resources Development Department Minister Sudhangshu Das confirmed the plan on Wednesday following a board meeting of the Gomati Cooperative Milk Union.

The state is tapping the National Dairy Development Board for technical help. They want to overhaul processing and the entire supply chain. A tripartite agreement between the state, the Union, and the national board is already in place to guide this work. "The main objective is to increase the production of milk and milk-based products in Tripura. The demand for milk in the state is higher than the present level of production, so efforts are being made to increase production," Das said.

Growth is the priority. Gomati Cooperative Milk Union Chairman Ratan Ghosh said the organization currently supports 6,642 dairy farmers. They want to push that number to 10,000. Plans also include forming 52 new milk-producing cooperative societies. The board is now reviewing how to best execute various state and central government schemes to help cattle rearers and farmers across the region.
