Agartala: The federal government opened new Foreigners Regional Registration Offices in Kohima, Agartala, and Bhubaneswar. This brings the national count to 20 offices. Home Minister Amit Shah wants an FRRO in every state capital. Foreign arrivals for tourism, medical care, and education are climbing. New offices now handle duties previously managed by distant hubs. Kolkata used to process cases for Kohima and Agartala. Hyderabad covered Bhubaneswar.

The ministry already opened locations in Jaipur, Chandigarh, Aizawl, Amravati, and Guwahati since 2025. Officials aim to simplify lawful travel while tightening immigration enforcement. These offices track visa compliance and handle overstays. They also manage penalties under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. This law replaced four older regulations to streamline entry and exit procedures. The Bureau of Immigration relies on these offices to maintain security.

"Officials describe the expansion as serving two aims: easing lawful travel and stay for foreign visitors, and strengthening enforcement of immigration rules and security requirements."

The ministry is eyeing further expansion. They are currently weighing sites in Bihar, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Meghalaya. The full list of active FRRO locations includes Ahmedabad, Amravati, Amritsar, Aizawl, Agartala, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chennai, Cochin, Chandigarh, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kohima, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Trivandrum.
