Shillong: Meghalaya is demanding a major cash boost. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma recently met with the Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region to request a hike in the Externally Aided Project ceiling. The current limit sits at 5,000 crore rupees.
Sangma argues the state deserves more room to grow. He maintains that Meghalaya tracks as a better performer than its neighbors in executing these projects. The administration wants the Finance Ministry to double the cap to at least 10,000 crore rupees.
The talks also shifted to sports. Sangma asked for federal backing to host the National Games. The plan involves spreading various competition disciplines across different North Eastern states to share the load. The Minister offered a brief response: "The matter will be examined."
