Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma took the helm of the United Muay Thai Association of India. The Chief Minister’s Secretariat confirmed the appointment on September 9. UMAI serves as the primary governing body for the combat sport in India. It gained recognition from the International Federation of Muaythai Associations in 2019, which operates under the International Olympic Committee.
Sangma’s new role aims to push the sport into the mainstream. General Secretary Dr. ShriRam Choudhary believes the move will grow the game. "His leadership and vision would help expand the sport’s reach and popularity across India," Choudhary said. Meghalaya already serves as a hub for the discipline. Athletes from the state have brought home over 50 medals from various national and international tournaments.
The Chief Minister recently honored these fighters during his CM Connect: Achievers of the Month program. The state is currently gearing up to host the 39th National Games in 2027. Officials proposed Muay Thai as an official discipline for the event. If approved, the competition will provide a high-level stage for fighters nationwide. It would also help cement Meghalaya as a serious destination for diverse sporting events and rising talent.

The Secretariat confirmed Sangma accepted the role of Chairman for the association. His recent recognition of state athletes took place specifically during the sports edition of the CM Connect: Achievers of the Month program.
