Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union is demanding a facts-first investigation into two separate police matters. Tensions rose Friday after a scooty struck Additional SP Lovish Garg near the Samkhamti Petrol Pump. Garg was working a traffic naka when the two riders collided with him. The KSU wants police to stick to CCTV footage and cold evidence rather than linking the unidentified riders to their organization without proof.
Pynshai Kupar Dkhar, the KSU information secretary, said the group expects the law to apply equally to everyone. No special treatment. If union members are guilty, he said, they should face the music. Dkhar insisted that the organization will not shield anyone, but he warned police against smearing the group with baseless rumors.
Separate from the road incident, police hauled in Kwilness Suchiang, the East Jaintia Hills general secretary, for questioning. Authorities targeted him over an August 19 bike rally that turned violent. Police took him from his home to Sardar police station before releasing him later that afternoon. The union claims the questioning is a harassment tactic. They argue that Suchiang's presence at a morning prayer service does not make him responsible for later vandalism.
“Prayer before a public programme cannot be taken to mean involvement in acts of vandalism. Participation in prayer cannot, by itself, constitute evidence that a person was involved in any unlawful activity,” the union stated. The KSU maintains that investigators should hunt down actual offenders instead of taking the easy route by bullying office-bearers. They remain on high alert. The union vowed to fight against what they call the intimidation of their members.
