Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union suspects police plan to pile new charges against its top leadership. Union brass appeared before the District and Sessions Court on Saturday night following mandatory medical checks at Civil Hospital. President Raymond Kharjana, general secretary Reuben Najiar, and vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet already served a 14-day remand.
Former president Lambokstarwell Marngar questioned the odd timing of the weekend court appearance. He believes authorities are fishing for new cases to keep the trio locked up. “What is the urgency to produce them before the court on a holiday?” Marngar asked. He claims the union successfully resolved 70 percent of its agenda with the government, though unresolved friction remains regarding nurse recruitment at NEIGRIHMS.
Marngar clarified that the union did not demand the leaders' release as a requirement for these negotiations. Regardless, the group needs its top officers to hold the state to its promises. The leadership will convene soon to map out their next moves.
Officers pulled the three men into a transport vehicle after the brief hearing. Kharjana shouted a defiant message before leaving. “You may detain the members and leaders of the KSU, but you cannot detain the issues and causes raised by the KSU,” he said. Najiar echoed this sentiment, promising the group will stick to democratic methods to resolve its pending list of complaints.
