Shillong: Meghalaya officials gathered at the State Guest House in Shillong on October 29 to prepare for the second phase of Census 2027. This stage focuses on population enumeration. Chief Secretary Shakil P Ahammed chaired the conference, calling for total participation to ensure no resident goes uncounted. The state needs accurate data to hit growth targets. Meghalaya aims for a 10-billion-dollar economy, eventually pushing to 16 billion.

Ahammed noted that geographic hurdles remain. Enumerators must reach people in remote spots like Baghmara, Dalu, and Ranikor. He warned that poor data hurts welfare planning, education, and road connectivity. “Every person must be counted to ensure that no community is excluded from government programmes and services,” Ahammed said. He praised the 10,000 personnel who finished the housing phase despite operational difficulties.

State Nodal Officer Pooja Pandey confirmed the shift to digital tools to boost accuracy and security. Deputy Registrar General Vrushali Abhijit Warade outlined the operational framework, including the use of mobile applications, the SE Portal, and the Enumeration Block Creation Portal. The Centre will provide financial and technical backing for the work. District officials received instructions on the questionnaire, Census Act rules, and publicity strategies. Deputy Director Aibor Sanglyne closed the meeting by ordering staff to maximize coverage across the state.
