Shillong: South Garo Hills groups are launching a two-day non-cooperation movement to protest the deplorable state of National Highway 62. The road, also known as NH-217, remains in ruins despite past protests. Multiple organizations including the FKJGP, ADE, AYWO, AHAM, NGCO, APA, and ADIL spearheaded the previous action on September 2 and 3.
Those groups previously gave the state government 15 days to address repairs. The government ignored the deadline. Now, the coalition is escalating their demands. They intend to stage the movement from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on September 24 and 25. The protests will take place in Baghmara, Nongalbibra, Chokpot, Rongara, and Gasuapara. Business operations and daily travel suffer due to the highway's poor condition.
Former Siju-Rongara MLA Rophul S Marak has pressured the government to begin immediate talks with the agitators. "NH-62 rama namsrangjahani a·sel salanti songre songgabatenggipa manderang neng·nikanirangko chagrongna nangengani gimin ia dolrangni dabianiara nangchongmotgipa dabianian ong·enga," Marak stated. He added that the state must provide a clear timeline for construction to resolve years of hardship for the people of South Garo Hills.
