Residents Block Assam Officials in Border Village Dispute

Shillong: Tensions flared in Mukroh on Monday. Villagers stopped Assam government officials from collecting household data, effectively shutting down an enumeration exercise. The residents argued the village falls under Meghalaya, not Assam or the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council.

Locals refused to provide demographic details during the confrontation. Reports claim one enumerator faced threats of physical harm, though investigators have not verified the charge. The area goes by Mukroh in Meghalaya and Mokru in Assam.

Residents pointed to years of support from the Meghalaya government as proof of their status. They highlighted housing benefits from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, noting they never received similar aid from Assam. One resident stated, "We do not come under the jurisdiction of the KAAC or the administration of Assam."

This standoff highlights the messy reality of the long-running border dispute between the two states. The village remains a flashpoint for regional authority.
