Shillong: Border negotiations between Meghalaya and Assam are currently sitting in cold storage. The second phase of joint inspections faces a complete standstill because the two state governments cannot agree on a schedule. Officials remain deadlocked on when to start the next round of field reviews.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong confirmed on Thursday that Meghalaya is prepared to move forward. However, he noted the state cannot act alone. Tynsong explained the process requires a mutual agreement to ensure both sides are fully prepared before work begins on the ground.
Tynsong pointed to the inherent difficulty of coordinating with a neighboring state. "If I say I am ready tomorrow, suppose if Assam is not ready yet, what can I do?" he said. Meghalaya refuses to unilaterally set a date while Assam keeps its intentions unclear.
The Deputy Chief Minister suggested the inspections might occur sometime in October or November. He declined to pin down a specific calendar day. Until Assam confirms its availability, the border issue remains stuck in a holding pattern.
