Shillong: Opposition members of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council blasted the state of their own hostel during Thursday’s winter session. They reported leaking ceilings, thick filth, and swarms of rats. Mairang-Nongkhlaw MDC Equator L. Nongrang told the House that the building is barely habitable. He explained he had to use an umbrella even when stepping just outside his room during rainfall.
Titosstarwell Chyne, the Opposition Leader, backed the complaints. Ricky Shullai and Grace Mary Kharpuri joined him to demand better hygiene. The building currently falls short of basic standards.
Executive Member in-charge of Finance, Seiborlang Warbah, promised action. He allocated 10 lakh rupees from the 2026-27 budget for immediate repairs. Crews should start work next month. Warbah expects the fixes to kill off the pest problem for good. CEM Winston Tony Lyngdoh confirmed a larger budget for the project. The Council set aside 1 crore rupees total to renovate both the hostel and the main office premises.
