Meghalaya Rolls Out First Statewide School Grading System

Shillong: Meghalaya launched its first comprehensive school assessment framework on July 24. The Meghalaya School Performance Grading Index (MSPGI) 2025-26 will track 11,443 schools across 12 districts. It relies on certified UDISE+ 2025-26 data to measure performance. The index uses 43 specific indicators spread across five domains: accessibility, digital education, infrastructure, National Education Policy activities, and quality standards.

Each school faces a 1,000-point scale. Officials will issue individual report cards detailing scores, rankings, and one of 17 performance grades. Categories range from Utkarsh, meaning outstanding, down to Akanshi-10, requiring intensive support. The system mirrors the Union Ministry of Education's national index but applies the metrics to individual institutions.

The Education Minister pushed back on the idea that the index is just a leaderboard. "The MSPGI is intended to serve as a diagnostic and planning tool rather than merely a ranking system," the Minister said. The goal is to help teachers and School Management Committees pinpoint institutional gaps.

Data shows Meghalaya is already climbing national charts. The state hit a record 525.71 points in 2025-26, up from 401.62 in 2022-23. This jump moved the state from the Akanshi-3 to the Akanshi-1 category, marking its first exit from the lowest performance band. Authorities confirmed the MSPGI works alongside existing inspections, but it does not measure student learning outcomes directly. Schools must now use their results to coordinate improvement plans with block and district officials.
