Shillong: Dr Homiwell Memorial Secondary School in Mawklot started its silver jubilee festivities on Wednesday. The event commemorates 25 years of service. Founder Rev EH Kharkongor hoisted the jubilee flag to kick off the proceedings. He challenged students to apply their knowledge to help their neighbors. Education must serve a higher purpose. "The pursuit of education should lead to wisdom and be used to uplift others rather than oppress them," Rev Kharkongor said.
Headmistress Renuka Kharkongor detailed the school's humble start in 2001. The late Rain Augustine Lyngdoh, then Meghalaya's minister for Primary Education, inaugurated the site. Back then, the school served 42 students with two teachers. Today, nearly 300 students fill the classrooms. The school now boasts a 100 per cent pass rate on state board SSLC exams. Rev Kharkongor drew his inspiration from eight years leading the John Roberts Theological Seminary. He founded the school alongside his late wife and local leaders to honor Dr Homiwell Lyngdoh.
Chief guest Hamletson Dohling, adviser to the Meghalaya Chief Minister, promised ongoing support for the staff. He pushed for schools to teach local youth about historic figures like Dr Homiwell Lyngdoh. Former Mawhati MDC Teilinia Thangkhiew also spoke at the event. She told students to copy Mother Teresa and perform acts of kindness. Village headman Mawkordor Nongneng thanked the community for their backing. Alumnus Ricky Nelson Nongdhar shared memories of his time there from nursery to matriculation. The celebration included music and dance. The party runs until December 29.
