Shillong: Meghalaya schools face a staffing crisis. Data presented during the Legislative Assembly autumn session on August 25 reveals 1,124 government schools operate with just one teacher. Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui confirmed these figures while responding to legislator Mizanur Kazi. The state faces a massive vacancy problem.
A total of 893 teaching posts remain empty. Lower primary schools suffer the most with 748 vacancies. Upper primary schools report 38 gaps. Secondary schools need 91 teachers, while higher secondary schools face 16 vacancies. The government claims it is working to fix these gaps through Mission Education.
Infrastructure also lags behind. Seventy-six schools lack science laboratories. Eighteen operate without computer facilities. One school has no library. The minister noted progress in the plain belt areas, stating, "The government was undertaking several measures under Mission Education to improve infrastructure in government schools, particularly those located in the plain belt areas."
Work finished at several sites during the first two phases. Phase I completed construction at Charbatapara, Milonpur, Bholarbhita JB, Pushkarni Para, and Magurmari Government LP schools. Phase II saw completion at Ronkhala, Chibinang, Batabari, and Bhajamara Government LP schools. Under Phase III, crews finished Hallidayganj JB and Peradanga Government LP schools. Construction continues at Golagre Government LP School.
