Shillong: Voice of the People Party president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit wants 32 seats in the 2028 Assembly elections. He laid out this goal before thousands of supporters at Polo Ground on Saturday. The party aims to contest 36 seats total. Basaiawmoit demanded accountability for recruitment irregularities and corruption, specifically citing a recent case in West Khasi Hills. He promised the party will protect no one found guilty of wrongdoing.
Basaiawmoit emphasized the movement must last. "We do not want the VPP to exist for only five years. We want the party to continue through the generations of our children and grandchildren," he told the crowd. The party currently holds 26 MDCs, four MLAs, and one MP. These figures show the group has become a major political force since its start in 2018.
The party faces an immediate test in the upcoming Shillong parliamentary by-election. Dr. Batskhem Myrboh is running as the candidate. Supporters at the rally donated over Rs 3 lakh to fund Myrboh’s campaign. Basaiawmoit noted that any extra money would head back to party coffers. While some have sought tickets using the party platform, Basaiawmoit maintained that leadership chooses the candidates. He argued the law must treat everyone the same, regardless of their status or power.
