Shillong: The Voice of the People Party is calling out the NPP-led MDA government for dumping 15 to 16 departments on senior IAS officer Vijay Kumar Damera. Party president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit raised the alarm on Sunday, questioning how a single official could manage such a massive workload. He argued that Meghalaya has plenty of other qualified senior bureaucrats who are being ignored.
"The government has entrusted him with 15 to 16 departments. This is a huge responsibility. Can he really do justice to all the work?" Basaiawmoit asked. He noted that the imbalance makes no sense and risks slowing down critical state functions.
Kumar currently serves as Commissioner and Secretary of Finance, Planning, Sports and Youth Affairs, Tourism, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, and Urban Affairs. His heavy portfolio also includes roles in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, the Meghalaya Institute of Entrepreneurship, the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority, the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society, and Meghalayan Age Ltd.
Basaiawmoit accused the government of playing favorites by sidelining experienced staff. He claimed the leadership pushes groupism, favoring officials who fall in line over those with different perspectives. He warned that assignments must be based on ability and experience, not on who is closest to the ruling party. Honest work matters most. The state deserves better cooperation among its leadership to effectively serve the people.
