Shillong: The Voice of the People Party is taking a stand. With the 2028 Assembly elections on the horizon, the party is pushing voters to stick to their convictions and reject outside inducements. This move serves as a direct jab at politicians who dump their parties once they secure a seat.
VPP president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit wants political consistency. He claims that principles should never take a backseat to personal gain. He compared the current political climate to an Aesop fable about a sheep fleeing a wolf. "Calls for unity, he said, remain hollow unless translated into action."
Spokesperson Airpeace W. Rani did not mince words. He claims party-hopping legislators betray the trust of every voter who put them in office. According to Rani, these representatives treat the public mandate like private property to be traded for personal or political leverage.
This rhetoric hits as Meghalaya politics undergoes a massive shift. Eleven out of 12 UDP MLAs recently abandoned the party. They jumped ship to the ruling NPP and the BJP. Now, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh stands as the only legislator left in the party.
