Shillong: VPP supremo Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit hammered the NPP-led MDA Government on August 8. He accused the administration of acting in a vindictive manner toward opposition members. The government continues to strip power from elected officials. It denies them enough time to debate vital public issues on the Assembly floor.
Basaiawmoit claimed the current proceedings serve as a smoke screen. "The state government is vindictive especially when it comes to the opposition parties where they also undermine and belittle the status and position of the elected representatives," he stated. He insists the administration wants to look transparent while keeping dissent under wraps.
The attack follows a massive protest march to the State Secretariat on August 6. Thousands of supporters showed up under heavy security. The VPP took to the streets after the government ignored their previous pleas for action. The party pushed for a white paper on the Lumpongdeng project and better oversight for the MPSC and District Selection Committees.
Protesters also demanded stronger protection for indigenous rights and stricter migration laws. They want the state to stop rehiring retired workers and protect teacher benefits. Environmental concerns remain high, with activists calling for controls on coke and cement units along with illegal sand mining. Basaiawmoit argued that a real dialogue would have made the protest unnecessary.
