Shillong: Meghalaya Rajya Sabha MP James P.K. Sangma sounded the alarm on the incomplete fencing along the India-Bangladesh border. He labeled the open gaps a major security risk. The region lacks proper containment. Sangma plans to press the Union government and local authorities to finish the job as soon as possible.
Reports suggest illegal entries are on the rise. Sangma pointed to these gaps as the primary reason for the influx. He believes the integrity of the border depends on fixing these vulnerabilities. "I think the matter of the unfenced or the border fencing which remains incomplete is very, very important," he said.
The state shares 443 kilometers of border with Bangladesh. The terrain is difficult. Dense hills and forests make surveillance a nightmare for security forces. Beyond preventing illegal migration, the barrier is needed to halt cross-border criminal activity. It protects the border communities. Constant patrolling and intelligence gathering are part of the broader plan.
Sangma failed to provide specific numbers regarding the spike in illegal crossings. He did not point to exact locations where people slip through. There is no official timeline for the work. He remains committed to pushing the issue with federal officials to ensure better management of the line.
