Agartala: Two Bangladeshi border guards were detained by locals Thursday night after crossing into India near the Rahimpur-Ashabari border in Tripura. Assistant Sub-Inspector Imran Hossain and Constable Ruhit Dewan were reportedly drunk. The duo ventured to the zero-line in the Sepahijala district and tried to grab a local businessperson. Residents fought back. They tackled the pair before the Border Security Force arrived at the scene.
The men suffered injuries during the struggle. Soldiers from the 49th Battalion of the BSF hauled them to the Asharam Bari camp. They spent the night under guard while undergoing medical exams. Tensions mounted at the border fence. The situation required a high-level diplomatic sit-down to resolve the standoff.
Both sides met at 1 pm on Friday near gate 163 and border pillar 2057. Representatives from police and intelligence agencies watched the proceedings at the zero line. The BSF organized the talk to settle the diplomatic headache. Following the discussion, the BSF handed the two men back to their superiors. The incident has left officials questioning current security, specifically noting that the guards crossed the fencing with ease. One report stated, "The incident has raised questions over border surveillance and security arrangements in the area."
