Shillong: Meghalaya election officials have cleared over 95 percent of notice hearings as the state prepares for its final electoral roll publication on October 26. Chief Electoral Officer B.D.R. Tiwari led the charge, meeting with election officers and political party representatives to hammer out the details of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision.

The draft roll listed 21,69,243 voters. Officials churned through 6,51,735 notices during this revision, addressing 2,22,786 cases with no mapping and 4,28,949 cases involving mapping discrepancies. To date, 6,21,399 hearings are done, hitting a completion rate of 95.35 percent. Out of these, 2,641 people were flagged as ineligible, while 20,86,026 electors remain on the list for final publication.

The office processed 28,627 new applications. This haul includes 17,248 requests for name inclusion, 1,963 requests for deletions, and 9,416 update requests. Officials must finalize the remaining backlog following Election Commission of India guidelines. Tiwari stressed the need for precision, noting, "no eligible elector should be left behind."

After the October 26 deadline, the state will launch a drive to catch first-time voters and anyone else missed during the primary revision. The government warned that holding an Elector Photo Identity Card is not enough to cast a ballot. Citizens must confirm their names are on the actual roll through the Voters Service Portal or their local Booth Level Officer.

Election officials purged two foreigners from the rolls at Mawsynram in the East Khasi Hills. CEO B.D.R. Tiwari confirmed the move alongside the discovery of 406 duplicate entries, also known as dual voters, scattered across the state. North Garo Hills led the count with 113 duplicates, followed by West Garo Hills with 64 and East Garo Hills with 63.

Of the 2,641 ineligible electors flagged, 420 failed to provide the necessary documents, 129 skipped their hearings, and several others could not be tracked down. The draft roll figure of 21,69,243 shows a significant drop from the 23,49,645 voters listed prior to this intensive audit. Further breakdown of the 9,416 update requests shows 1,673 voters shifted their residence, while 7,743 filed for corrections.
