Meghalaya Election Officials Race to Digitise Rolls Before August Deadline

Shillong: Meghalaya election authorities have pushed hard on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. They distributed 23,06,500 Enumeration Forms to voters as of July 21. That covers 98.17 per cent of the 23,49,645 total electors. Officials have digitised 14,07,446 of those forms. That is 62.15 per cent of the electorate.

Three districts hit a perfect mark. West Jaintia Hills, South West Khasi Hills, and South West Garo Hills completed 100 per cent distribution. East Garo Hills followed at 99.93 per cent, with Ri-Bhoi reaching 99.80 per cent. West Khasi Hills leads the digitisation effort at 79.86 per cent. Other high performers include South West Khasi Hills at 78.51 per cent and East Jaintia Hills at 75.44 per cent.

The state flagged 53,908 electors as Absentee, Shifted, Death, or Duplicate. This includes 32,382 deceased individuals, 13,379 shifted voters, 5,795 absentees, 2,029 duplicates, and 323 people who turned down the forms. Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari confirmed these cases face verification under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. He met with political parties to discuss the progress. He credited the 892 Booth Level Agents for their help. Tiwari said, "They would play an important role in assisting voters, verifying electoral roll details and ensuring greater transparency and accuracy in the revision process."

Election workers want citizens to cooperate with house visits. Voters can also use the ECINET app or the official online portal to submit documents. The state plans to publish the draft electoral roll on August 5.
