Shillong: Meghalaya election authorities have flagged 149,656 voters for potential removal from the state electoral rolls. This purge follows the Special Intensive Revision exercise, which identified these individuals under the Absent, Shifted, Dead, and Duplicate category. These names represent 6.37 percent of the total 2,349,645 registered electors.
The clock is ticking. The deadline for submitting verified enumeration forms is Wednesday. Voters who fail to comply risk exclusion from the draft electoral roll, which officials will publish on August 5.
The breakdown of flagged entries is specific. It includes 74,851 deceased individuals, 37,914 shifted voters, 28,826 absent voters, 5,899 duplicate records, and 2,166 electors who refused to submit forms. Chief Electoral Officer B.D.R. Tiwari emphasized that officials will process these cases under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. He stated, "All such cases will be processed strictly in accordance with the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, following due verification and after providing adequate opportunity to the concerned electors or their family members, wherever applicable."
While 99.62 percent of enumeration forms are distributed, a geographical mapping gap remains. About 2,24,435 forms, or 9.55 percent, lack location data. Ri-Bhoi district holds the highest unmapped rate at 23.45 percent, while South West Khasi Hills follows at 14.53 percent. Ten of the state's 12 districts reached full distribution. East Khasi Hills remains the largest district with 632,146 electors.
Tiwari also announced the Election Commission of India approved the addition of 86 new polling stations. This brings the state total to 3,637. The revised database will inform future delimitation efforts. Voters should submit forms to Booth Level Officers or use the online voter service portal immediately.
