Aizawl: Mizoram election officials started a month-long verification drive on October 1 to clean up the state's electoral rolls. This follows the recently completed Special Intensive Revision. Chief Electoral Officer Zarzosanga stated the work continues through October as part of the state's push to keep voter records accurate.
Electoral Registration Officers and Booth Level Officers are now comparing the new rolls against pre-revision data. Booth officials must personally check cases where names disappeared from the list. They need to document exact reasons for every deletion. The department currently faces 3,840 appeals from voters who want their records reviewed. Lawngtlai district filed 1,679 of those appeals.
Officials deleted 78,442 names during the revision cycle that ran from May 20 to June 28. The final rolls dropped on September 7. Before the revision, Mizoram counted roughly 8.75 lakh electors. Teams distributed enumeration forms to everyone, but 46,162 forms never made it back. These names vanished before the draft rolls appeared on July 4. Another 32,280 names hit the cutting room floor before the final count.
The current rolls hold about 8.35 lakh electors, including 4.32 lakh women. The Election Commission intends to keep the process tight. As Zarzosanga noted, "The objective of the SIR was to ensure that no eligible citizen was left out of the electoral rolls while preventing the inclusion of ineligible persons." Voters can find appeal services and search tools on the department's website.
