Aizawl: The Young Mizo Association is pushing for aggressive oversight during the Special Intensive Revision 2026 of Mizoram's electoral rolls. Leaders from the state's largest civil society organization met with election officials in Mamit to demand that only genuine citizens remain on the voter list. The draft rolls published July 4 show 8,28,906 total electors, including 4,29,881 women.
Mamit District Election Officer Lalnunfela Chawngthu chaired the session. An 11-member delegation from the Central Young Mizo Association attended alongside Electoral Registration Officers from the district's three assembly constituencies. CYMA General Secretary Malsawmliana labeled the verification process a matter of "utmost importance." He pointed to mass deletions in other states as proof of the stakes involved.
Local officials are taking steps to tighten the process. Dampa constituency ERO N. Lalzarzova promised that only eligible voters will make the final cut, citing a focus on proper documentation. Hachhek ERO Lalchhanhima confirmed that authorities replaced unsuitable Booth Level Officers to bolster the integrity of the review.
Concerns over shifting demographics dominated the discussion. CYMA Treasurer H. Duhkima noted that the Mizo people are a small indigenous community vulnerable to population changes. Mamit YMA unit president H. Darhmingliana specifically flagged the growth of the Chakma population. Other YMA leaders reported suspicious population spikes in areas lacking their organizational presence. Election officials agreed to notify YMA groups of upcoming hearings to ensure transparency as they build a credible, accurate, and fair roll.
