Aizawl: Mizoram's Mizo Zirlai Pawl student organization is calling out state election officials over explosive voter growth. On July 14, leaders challenged the claims of former Chief Electoral Officer Garima Gupta. She previously stated the Special Intensive Revision 2026 showed no abnormal increases. Data tells a different story. The MZP analysis of the July 4 draft rolls highlights massive growth in Chakma-majority villages in southern Mizoram.
Growth numbers reach 376 per cent. Seven villages spiked over 200 per cent, while 16 others topped 100 per cent. Conversely, Mizo-majority villages in the same areas saw modest gains of only 10 to 20 per cent. Sumasumi village in Lunglei district saw voters jump from 52 in 2005 to 248 today. That is a 376.92 per cent rise. The MZP examined 95 villages total.
The Young Mizo Association is also sounding the alarm. They reported improbable errors in the digitisation of Enumeration Forms. They compared new drafts against 2005 records and population data to find these irregularities. CYMA president R. Lalngheta plans to submit a formal representation to authorities for a full investigation. Local groups are now pushing for strict verification of every doubtful entry.
Before her transfer to Delhi on July 9, Gupta maintained the process was clean. She told reporters, "We do not see any case of a foreign national being entered in the electoral roll. As per the draft roll, there is no large increase or abnormal growth in voter numbers." Her department failed to collect forms for 46,163 voters. This includes 21,295 deaths, 13,978 shifts, 8,333 untraceable people, and 309 religious refusals.
Political parties have joined the fray. They now demand the removal of any names lacking linkage to the 2005 rolls. Officials must process all claims and objections before the August 4 deadline. The draft rolls currently list 8,28,906 total electors. This includes 4,29,881 women.
