Mizoram Funds Rehab Network to Treat Thousands of Addicts

Aizawl: Mizoram currently runs 48 drug rehabilitation centers. Over 5,200 people receive care there. Officials confirmed these numbers on Sunday, August 30. The state government funneled Rs 42 lakh into these facilities this year to keep them afloat.

The state-run Hulhliap facility carries a heavier load. This detoxification center sits at the Synod Revival camping center in Neihbawi, near Aizawl. It opened on June 23 last year. It holds 200 inmates at once. Since the doors opened, 2,255 people have checked in for treatment.

The facility has finished nine batches of patients so far. Government spending on these batches hit Rs 3.86 crore. Outside sources kicked in another Rs 1.34 lakh. Patients undergo a strict regimen. "Those admitted to the centre initially undergo 15 days of detoxification treatment under the supervision of doctors, nurses and counsellors."

Spiritual counseling follows the medical detox. Once the stay ends, the staff sends people home to relatives or shifts them into long-term rehab centers. This setup forms the core of the state push to fight drug addiction.
