Shillong: Rajya Sabha MP James P.K. Sangma wants the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act to visit Shillong. He formally wrote to the panel’s chairman, Dr. Jaiswal, to request a trip to meet local stakeholders. The committee holds the mandate to finalize its findings before the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament concludes.
Sangma kept the panel's internal talks under wraps. He did confirm the letter, noting that a local hearing makes sense for those directly impacted. “I am sure that under the chairmanship of Dr Jaiswal, the panel will be able to complete its task,” he said. He remained tight-lipped when asked about remarks from Congress Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma regarding the legislation.
The legislator aims to amplify the Northeast perspective. He wants a balanced report. In Meghalaya, civil society and church groups worry about the amendment bill. They fear tighter rules will choke foreign funding for vital health, education, and community development work.
