Shillong: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong says the FCRA Amendment Bill deserves a hard look. He insists the rules hit every group getting foreign cash, not just religious ones. The NPP state president spoke in Shillong this past Tuesday. He stated, “If you talk about FCRA amendment bill, it does not mean specifically only for Christian organisation. In fact, this is for any organisation who are receiving funds or contributions from outside the country.”
Tynsong supports the decision to send the bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee. He believes this move lets the government fix flaws in the current text. The bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha in March 2026, sets new rules for what happens when groups lose or give up their registration. Many NGOs have raised alarms about these changes.
The committee now includes Meghalaya Rajya Sabha MP James Pangsang Kongkal Sangma as a special invitee. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma requested this appointment to ensure the region has a voice in the room. Tynsong sees this as a major win for the Northeast and local organizations. He refused to comment on calls for international groups to step in. For now, the bill stays in committee. The final rules depend on how the parliamentary process shakes out.
