Shillong: The National People’s Party remains in the dark. State president and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong confirmed on Wednesday that the party does not know if the central government accepted proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act. This uncertainty persists as Parliament debates the Bill during the ongoing Monsoon Session.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma recently led a delegation to New Delhi to meet with central leaders. They pushed for changes to specific clauses affecting Christian organisations in the Northeast and Meghalaya. Tynsong stated, "The Government of India assured the delegation that the clauses of concern would be amended." Despite this verbal commitment, the party has received no update confirming if those changes exist in the current text.
Pressure is mounting on NDA allies to declare a position. In Mizoram, the Mizo National Front is demanding their state’s two MPs vote against the legislation. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Lalduhoma noted that Zoram People’s Movement Lok Sabha MP Richard Vanlalhmangaiha will oppose the Bill if the Centre ignores the state government’s suggestions.
Tynsong maintains that the FCRA affects diverse organisations nationwide, not just Christian groups. He refuses to commit to a vote until he confirms the status of the requested revisions. While the Bill is already in play, he argues that the Centre can still adjust the language before the final vote.
