Shillong: BJP MLA Mayralborn Syiem dismissed claims that proposed changes to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act target Christians. He insisted that license renewal remains a standard requirement for all groups getting money from abroad. Everyone must answer for their funds. "Everyone has to be accountable. Renewal of licences for receiving foreign funding is mandatory. We are only saying that it has to be prospective from now on if and when implemented," Syiem told reporters on Thursday.
Syiem, who recently jumped from the United Democratic Party alongside seven other MLAs, rejected the idea of a Hindutva agenda in Meghalaya. He stated the party will prioritize unemployment, development, and women's safety to secure victories in upcoming elections. The group joined the party to push for specific goals. They want the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule and the return of the MRSSA Bill. They also seek to lift the ban on coal mining and relocate Dalit Sikhs.
He expressed hope that the NDA government would handle these long-standing matters. The MLAs held no hard feelings toward their former party leadership. Syiem noted that politicians often shift allegiances, adding, "There is space everywhere in politics to go." If the central government fails to address their demands, the legislators will decide on a new path in due course.
