Hundreds Race in Rilbong Puja Centennial Run

Shillong: More than 450 runners hit the streets of Shillong on Friday morning. They gathered for the Rilbong Puja Centennial Run 2026. The event marks 100 years of Durga Puja celebrations in the area.

Veteran runner Kmoin Wahlang flagged off the race at 6 am from Rhino Museum Point. The 79-year-old Mawkyrwat resident is famously known as India’s “Super Granny.” Runners moved from the starting line toward the Rilbong Ground, where the centennial Puja pandal now stands.

Participants spanned every age group. Seven-year-old Zhavia Synrem from Mawngap completed the course as the youngest runner in the field.

A prize distribution ceremony followed the event at 9:30 am. Senior government officials DP Wahlang and Osmand Nongbri joined the organizing committee and invited guests at the ground. Marathon Committee Chairman Jayanta Sen and Convener Aneesh Chaudhuri credited the police, district administration, and volunteers for the smooth run. They also thanked the Meghalaya Co-operative Apex Bank, the media, and every participant for their support.
