Shillong: Authorities detained 27 Bangladeshi nationals in Guwahati and Bongaigaon earlier this week. Police reports indicate the group walked across the border in the Dawki sector. They moved through Meghalaya, hit the Jorabat transit point, and eventually reached Guwahati before capture.
Assam Police suspect agents helped them move. Investigators are currently working to identify the brokers and transporters who facilitated the journey. The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) now wants a time-bound probe into this security breach. They fear the movement suggests major gaps in border surveillance.
The group issued a statement on Saturday calling for a deep look into the incident. The HYC argues that the detention in Assam is only the start. They want answers on why the group moved through Meghalaya without detection. The organization stated, "The apprehension of the 27 persons in Assam should not mark the end of the matter."
The HYC is pushing for a total review of security along footpaths and traditional crossing points. They demand better coordination between the BSF, Meghalaya Police, and Assam Police. Any official found negligent must face consequences. This case echoes a January incident where Meghalaya Police intercepted 18 Bangladeshi nationals near Dawki and caught suspected local facilitators.
