Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) wants Advocate General Amit Kumar out of a job. They demanded his immediate resignation on Monday. The group also called for a time-bound, independent inquiry into legal bills topping Rs 1 crore. The MDA government stands accused of shielding its top law officer despite mounting evidence of billing discrepancies.
Bar association members claim Kumar charged Rs 1.5 lakh per appearance in commercial court. This flatly contradicts Kumar’s own September 3 public statement. He claimed at the time that his fees stuck to the approved schedule: Rs 20,000 for High Court cases and Rs 40,000 for Supreme Court appearances.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem slammed the administration for its silence. He demanded the government reveal who authorized these massive payments. "Public money is not Conrad Sangma’s personal money, not Amit Kumar’s money and not the property of the government of the day," Synrem stated. He insists every rupee must be accounted for.
The council wants a full audit of all legal fees and payments made to the Advocate General, his associates, and outside counsels. Synrem challenged Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to prove his government is accountable to the public. The HYC warns that political protection cannot hide the truth from the people of Meghalaya.
